When to use it
Categories where trust is the barrier to purchase and you have real documentation to show. Skip it entirely if you do not.
Setting it up
- Add the section and write the heading and intro under Content. Mobile header alignment sets the eyebrow, heading, and body text to left or center on phones.
- New sections start with the eyebrow Evidence and testing, heading Proof, documented., and introduction The testing, sourcing, and standards behind this formula, supplied and substantiated by the brand. The band and card both use scheme 3, with 72px top and bottom padding. The four starter records are Clinical testing, Ingredient sourcing, Certifications, and Quality standards. Clinical testing starts open; Certifications reads the product certifications and standards attribute, falling back to its typed details.
- Heading size matches Product dossier and Protocol timeline: Small scales from 28 to 40px, Medium from 32 to 56px, and Large from 36 to 72px with the viewport. Medium is the default. Below 750px, the sizes are 20, 24, and 28px. Record heading size controls the record titles separately.
- Set your provenance wording under Record labels and badges. There are separate labels for supplied and not-supplied states — use both honestly.
- Add one Proof record block per document, with its title, date, and status. The ledger holds up to eight records, and one is open at a time: opening a record closes the one before it. Open the first record by default or a record's own Open this record by default chooses which starts open; if several are set, the first one wins.
- Content width under Style is Standard by default, which holds the ledger at 1200px on wide screens so rows and metadata keep their proportions and line up with Product reviews below. Wide fills the page width.
- The ledger is a card on a band. Color scheme paints the band and Card color scheme paints the card, so a white card can sit on a cream band. Show card shadow lifts the card off the band and is on by default.
- Attach media under Media if you have a document image or scan to show. On phones, Media position on mobile chooses where it goes: Above the records (the default), Below the records so the records come straight after the heading and the image closes the section, or Hidden. An uploaded Custom image always shows. Without one, product pages show the product being viewed, and pages without a product, such as the home page, show a default illustration.
- To show a video instead, set Media type to Video and use Upload video. Turn on Autoplay video to start it automatically: it plays muted and looped while on screen, never starts for shoppers who prefer reduced motion, and the play button stays available to pause it. The video downloads nothing until it is on screen and playing. Before then the section shows the video's preview image. If JavaScript is unavailable, the browser's native video controls remain available for manual playback.
- Choose Image style under Media. Blend into background fills the story column and fades the top of the image into the section background below the heading, so the photograph reads as part of the header. Framed keeps the image in its own box, with its own corner radius control. Either way the image keeps its own shape, held between 4:5 portrait and 3:2 landscape, and Image width on desktop sets how much of the section it takes. On phones a portrait image is held to square at most, so the records start sooner.
- A certifications record can pull straight from the product: set Value source on that block. On pages without a product, such as the home page, the block shows its typed details instead. A resolved product value keeps the record visible even with the default heading and no manual evidence, and uses the supplied-state label. If the product value is missing, the block uses its typed details; a default record with no evidence stays hidden on the storefront. Documents, dates, and methods stay manual. See Per-product content.
Where the content comes from
Blocks own record headings, documents, dates, methods, links, and manual details. An optional Value source pulls the details from the viewed product's Shopify category attributes, with the typed details as fallback. Shopify has no native field for a test report.
Notes and cautions
- Label internal testing as internal. Presenting in-house results as independent verification is the kind of thing that costs a brand its credibility permanently, and it is the sort of claim regulators read closely.
- A ledger with three real documents beats one with ten vague ones.
Custom values in evidence records
Use a custom product metafield when the standard category attributes do not cover a value you want to display.
- Create a product metafield definition in Shopify admin, with a supported plain-value type.
- Fill the field on every product that should display it.
- In this section, open an evidence record and select Custom product metafield.
- Enter the definition’s full namespace and key, such as
custom.testing_summary, in the newly shown metafield identifier field. Enter this as plain text, without a dynamic-source connection. - Save and preview products with different values. Existing manual fallbacks remain available.
See Custom product metafield setup for field creation steps, supported types, this section’s exact fallback behavior, and troubleshooting. If you enter only the key without its namespace, the theme editor displays a message explaining the required format.
Starting defaults
New Proof ledger sections match the product template: Evidence and testing above Proof, documented., followed by “The testing, sourcing, and standards behind this formula, supplied and substantiated by the brand.” The band and card use scheme 3, with 72px top and bottom padding.
The preset adds Clinical testing, Ingredient sourcing, Certifications, and Quality standards, in that order. Clinical testing starts open. Certifications reads the viewed product’s certifications and standards attribute, with its typed details as fallback. The other records use manual details. Blocks own headings, documents, dates, methods, links, and manual details; the product attribute supplies only the Certifications details.
These defaults apply when adding a new section. Existing section instances keep their saved values.
Enter real evidence
New records leave document, date, method, details and links empty. Fill them only with information you can substantiate. Records without evidence stay hidden from shoppers and remain available in the editor. Starter headings identify topics; they do not claim that a test occurred. Block settings own the manual evidence; optional Shopify product attributes own resolved product details.
Complete legacy sample records do not publish example dates, documents, methods or collection links. Real resolved product details still appear. Edited merchant evidence keeps its values. Metadata tooltip controls have at least 24px height, visible keyboard focus and responsive botanical fallback art.
Section settings
Every setting on the section itself, in the order it appears in the theme editor. Group headings match the editor's own grouping.
Content
Aligns the eyebrow, heading, and body text on screens below 750px.
Record labels and badges
Use a small transparent image with a simple silhouette.
Media
Below the records brings the records up under the heading on phones and closes the section with the image or video. Larger screens keep their layout.
Uploaded videos play in the media panel after the shopper selects the play button.
Autoplaying videos play silently in a loop only while on screen and respect reduced-motion preferences. The play button stays available to pause them.
Replaces the product image. Pages without a product show a default illustration until you upload an image. 4:5 aspect ratio recommended.
Blend fills the column and fades the top of the image into the section background below the heading.
Style
Standard keeps the ledger at 1200px on wide screens, matching product reviews. Wide fills the page width.
Colors the ledger card. Color scheme above colors the band around it.
Lifts the ledger card off the section background.
Fades the section in on scroll. Respects the theme animation setting and reduced motion.
Blocks
Blocks are added, reordered, duplicated, and removed inside the section. Each type has its own settings.
Proof record record max 8
Enter only documentation the merchant can substantiate.
Use the date shown on the merchant's supporting documentation.
Describe the substantiated testing, sourcing, or certification method.
Fills the details from the product, which suits a certifications record. The typed details appear when the product has no value. Documents, dates and methods stay manual.
Enter the full product metafield identifier as plain text, such as custom.when_to_use. Reads each relevant product, including cards with their own product. Supports text, numbers, true/false, and lists of text or numbers. Missing or unsupported values keep the existing manual fallback or empty state.
Supply factual, substantiated information. Do not add unsupported performance, medical, or certification claims.
Optional. Link to merchant-supplied supporting documentation or a relevant store page.
Optional. Link to additional merchant-supplied methodology notes.
One record is open at a time. If you choose to open several records, the first one opens.
